World Chess Amateur opens

The 2022 FIDE World Amateur Championships started today in Malta. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich welcomed the participants of behalf of FIDE kicked off the event with the ceremonial first move.

Vice President of Malta Chess Federation Duncan Vella, on his opening speech stressed the efforts of Malta to host more International Chess competitions and presented a symbolic book with pictures from Malta as gift to FIDE President.

The event is played over three rating categories: U1700, U2000, U2300, in open and women sections. 197 players from 51 federations, including 27 title-holders will compete in Swiss tournaments over 9 rounds, under a classical time control.
